Why did the Tory party disintegrate in the first place?
> A number of events during 1827 - 1830 split the Tory party and allowed the Whigs to come to power.
1. Resignation of Lord Liverpool - Liverpool had been the glue holding his party together
2. Catholic emancipation - Tpries were completely against emancipation. O'Connell's campaign in Ireland forced the issure and so Wellington and Peel decided to give way. Protestant Tories never forgave them ---> Peel resigned
