Evacuation

• British thought Germans would bomb them from the air, so decided to evacuate children from the cities to the countryside.
• Became known as "Operation Pied Piper"
• Nearly 3 million were evacuated in September 1939
• teacher left with their pupils and schools were closed
• children under 5 went with their mothers, pregnant women also
• For many children the journey was exciting; they had never seen the country before, first time they had seen farm animals.
• Though many were distressed as it was the first time they had been away from home and were home-sick.
• Mainly working-class children were evacuated because the goverement expected that middle class people could afford to make arrangements
• Taken by train and were gathered in schools…
