SOLICITORS
Training
Law Degree or if you dont have a Law degree you can do an exra year taking the Common Professional Examination or a Graduate Diploma in Law. Next stage is the 1 year Legal Practice Course (practically based). They must then get a training contract where they must work in a solicitors firm for 2 years. Can also work in Crown Prosecution Servive or legal department of a local authority. They will be paid during the 2 years.
After this they will be admitted as a solicitor by the Law Society and their name will be added to the roll of solicitors.
Also non graduate route for more mature students. Must first become a legal executive. This route takes longer than the graduate route.
Criticisms of the training process
- Finance- student has to pay the £7000 cost for the LPC as its a post graduate course. Must also have to support themselves during this year. Poor families prevented from becoming solicitors.
- Non graduates only have to do 1 year of law which doesnt seem like…
