Its main function is to detect and remove viruses found in the system. It wills can your computer and compare file signatures against a database of all known current viruses. The database is updated daily. Most antivirus will work in real time and detect viruses as the enter the system.

A virus can cause system errors such as things malfunctioning or the memory filling up. Anti viruses can keep track of errors and any component not functioning correctly. It will initiate a find if it finds anything it suspects is a virus
