Background:
- 1910: Japan had annexed Korea
- Nov., 1943: GB, US, KMT (China) signed the Cario Declaration (Korea should become free) (Stalin accepted this)
- USSR put Communists into government in 1945, when the Red Army had invaded (US worried)
- Potsdam: 38th Parallel divide (due to previous point)
DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) (North Korea) & ROK (Republic of Korea) (South Korea):
- Initally, the US rejected both Rhee's & Kim's groups
- UN General Assembley agreed: Cupervise elections in both North & South Korea
- The USSR troops refused to let UN supervisors enter North Korea
- Each state claimed to represent the whole of Korea!
- 1948: USSR troops left, but left military equipment
DPRK:
- Apparently, the USSR supplied DPRK with more than they had given to the CCP!
- Useful base for the USSR to watch the events in China
ROK:
- Some US officials…
