Jane Eyre: 

Context:

• Religous - The beliefs of St John and Helen Burns were very common of the time Bronte was writing. This was a period of religous argument. 
• Literary - The gothic movement influences Bronte's novel. The description of Thronfield and in reference to the supernatural and madness.
• Global Historical - Colonialism and the rise of the Brirish Empire is imporant as a back group in Jane Eyre. This is suggested by references to Maderia and the West Indies. 
• Political - Women at the time could not vote, own property or have higher education, yet Jane seeks to have some kind of indepdence despite all of this.

• Marriage - For Jane, the idea of marriage is a balance and a partnership - not for money…
