Industrial British Crime and Punishment

The prison changed throught the Industrial period from being a collection of holding cells to a system of widespread correction facilities. People now wanted to change criminals to positive members of society, rather than lock them away.

The changed were as a result of the general public's opinion and the involvement of some key individuals to move the process quickly.

Elizabeth Fry - As a Quaker, her beliefs were that there is something of God in everyone. She saw the conditions and overcrowded cells and male jailers abusing their authority to get money from the inmates, as they were unpaid.
