HofM Timeline 1848-1948

1848- Many theories were belived including Spantaneous Generation, Miasma and The Four Humors.

1848- public heath act was futile and not inforced or compulsory so it incated no change or progress for publc health 

1854- Florence Nightingale goes to scutari (she belived in Miasma theory but her efforts ot reduce 'bad' air led to cleaner, more sanitary hospitals)

1857- Louis Pasteur identifies germas as a cause for disease

1858- The Great Stink caused goverment intervention and ultimatly ended the laissez faire 

1859- Notes on Nursing by Forence Nightngale is published 

1860-the Nitghingale school for nurses is opened

1861- Robert koch publishes germ theory

1865- Elizabeth Garret Anderson becomes the first female physician 

1866- Sanitary act

1867- Joseph Lister discovers that carbolic acid kills infections and develops aseptic surgery 

1875- Public Health Act pushed responsibility onto local councils

1879- the first vaccine, for chicken cholera, is developed by…
