Fitness
- The ability to perform daily tasks without undue fatigue.
- These daily tasks are different for elite performers in comparison to a non-athlete.
- The fitness requirements also cary depending on the physical activity. e.g. sprinting 100m requires the body to work anaerobically with great strength, speed and power, whereas running a marathon requires good muscular and cardio-respiratory endurance.
Health
- A state of physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
- This means an elite performer who has excellent fitness may not be seen as healthy if they suffer from depression.
Health-related components of fitness
Stamina
- aka cardio-respitory endurance, VO2 max or cardiovascular endurance.
- The ability to take in and use oxygen.
- Three factors - how effectively an individual can expire and inspire, how effective the transportation of oxygen is from the lungs to the muscles, and how well the oxygen is then used.
