Disasters result when hydro-meteorological hazards (cyclones, droughts and floods); and geophysical hazards (earthquakes, volcanoes + landslides / avalanches) threaten the life and property of increasing numbers of the world’s people. 

-          Environmental Hazards: ‘the threat posed to humans and the environment by natural events originating in it’. Useful to categorise them as geophysical / hydro- meteorological. Humans make the event worse, very few hazards caused by purely physical factors.

-          Geophysical Hazards: formed by tectonic / geological events (earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis.

-          Hydro-meteorological hazards: formed by hydrological (floods) +
