General Health
The definition of health by the World Health Organisation or WHO is;
'A state of complete physical, metal and social wellbeing and not merely in the absence of disease or infirmary.'
Effects of smoking, drugs and drinking:
- Smoking - in the long term it can increase chances of diseases such as lung cancer, heart disease and chronic bronchitis. By law cigarette packets have to have a health warning on the front.
- Alcohol - short term it can cause drunkness, lack or coordination and vomiting. Long term it can cause sureve damage to liver, muscles and heart as well as metal illness and damage to the immune system.
- Drugs - these include illegal drugs, prescription drugs and performance enhancing drugs such as anabolic steroids, which many sports people are tempted to take. All drugs are chemical substances that alter the biochemical system when they enter the body so they should only be used under medical supervision.
