Explain what is meant by the 'Rule of Law' (14)

?

The Rule of Law is a fundamental principle of our constitution. The rule of law simply means that the state should govern it's citizens in accordance to the rules agreed upon.

Britain is different to other Western Countries in that Britain has no written constitution. It's neither found in a specific document. However, we do have a constitution from rules about who governs, and the powers they have and that power is passed. Sources of our constitution include Acts of Parliament, Judicial Decisions and Conventions (traditions that have been followed over time). An example of this is the Human Rights Act. The US have a written constitution, with a famous 5th ammendment (right to stay silent.)

There are three main principles underpinning the Rule of Law. These are the separation of powers, the supremacy of parliament and the rule of law.
