Energy

Exothermic - a reaction that gives out energy to the surroundings, usually heat - shown by a rise in temperature

Endothermic - a reaction that takes in energy from the surroundings, usually heat - shown by a drop in temperature

You can measure energy transfer:

  • Taking temperature of reagents, mixing them in a polystyrene cup and measuring the temperature of the solution at the end of the reaction
  • BUT a lot of energy will be lost…
