1)- living conditions for urban people;
1897 – 15% lived in urban areas v 80% in UK
1914 – size of cities such as St Petersburg, Moscow, Riga and Kiev doubled in size
1914 – 50% all houses were made from wood (fire hazard) 74 towns and cities had access to electricity only 200 had piped water only 38 had a sewerage system (public health hazard)
Housing for industrial workers was especially poor – low wages Decree on Peace - which provided for all houses to be seized by the soviets (elected institutions of local government) and redistributed to industrial workers.
Mid-1930s in Moscow - 25% of the population was living in a room shared by two or more households
WWII devastation – Leningrad (St. Pete); Stalingrad; Vitebsk heavily destroyed
