Historically class was very important in deciding who you voted for. 1945-70s class alignment was very strong and you voted for the party that matched your class.
With the two main parties clear class-based choice to the electorate. GE 1970. 88%. The historical GE's relied on a small number of volatile floating voters. (less volatility)However, there were a few working-class tories who agreed with the ideas of the conservatives but this was not really the case with Labour. Each party had its core vote from their social class.
