Limestone Cycle
Limestone is very useful because it is used in everyday objects such as buildings, glass and even toothpaste. It is easily quarried and there are vast amounts of it for objects which are regularly used.
Calcium Carbonate is heated in a rotating kiln to around 1500 degrees celsius to form calcium oxide. This process is expensive due to the large cost of raw materials and the energy to heat also cost money.
Safety precaution you may need to take whilst heating limestone is to wear heat-protective gear
Limestone loses mass as it is heated because it loses the gas carbon dioxide
Limestone is easily eroded by acid rain , the equation below displays the reaction
CaCo3 + 2HCL ↪ CaCl2 + H20 + Co2
Calcium Carbonate is reacting with Hydrochloric acid to form Calcium Chloride, water and Carbon dioxide
Thermal Decomposition - breaking down using heat
All metal carbonates decompose whilst being heated . More reactive metals such as Potassium require a lot more heat than metals lower on the reactivity series
Copper carbonate can be…
