Nutrition
- There are five important nutrients:
- Proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals.
- Proteins: Proteins are needed for growth and repair of bones, teeth, cells etc. Proteins are made up of amino acids. Amino acids are very important for our body. High biological value proteins (HBV) are proteins which are high in the essential amino acids. HBV are found in foods like meats, fish, milk, eggs, cheese and soya beans. LBV proteins are the opposite to HBV proteins, they contain very little essential amino acids. These are found in cereals, nuts and pulses.
- Carbohydrates: They provide the body with energy. Within carbohydrates there are complex ones and simple ones. Complex ones give long lasting energy which are generally found in pasta, bread and cereals. However simple carbohydrates are found in cakes, jams and sweets (fatty foods) because they make blood sugar levels increase very quickly in a short space…
