Background to Bridget Jones Diary

Released in 2001, Working Title's Bridget Jones Diary is a British Romantic Comedy film based on Helen Fielding's novel. Both the film and Novel center around an adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Before the release of the film there was much speculation as to whether the casting was right. As the film represented a Britain then some believed it shouldhave a British Cast. However as the film was aimed at an American audience, or more speciffically an female american audience, by having an american actress for the main role ensured the film would be a success with this audience.
