in 1973, Britains 3rd application the EEC was finally accepted under George Pompidou. however, both labour and conservatives remained divided on the issue.
edward heath was passionately pro-Europe, this may have had an effect on why they got accepted.
Georges Pompidou also had the philosophy that the EEC needed britain just as much as britain needed the EEC.
