Background
- Over 110,000 solicitors in England and Wales
- They are controlled by the law society
Training (Stages)
1. Academic
2. Vocational
3. Practical
4. Post qualifications
1: Academic stage

- Gain a law degree
- Those with a degree in another subject do an extra year of core legal studies and take the Common Professional Exam (CPE) or the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL)
2: Vocational stage

- The student will then complete a 1 year Legal Practice Course (LPC)
- Stage 1 trains:
1. Core skills
2. Core modules

- Stage 2 trains:
1. Elective modules, where the student selects their own modules

- What the LPC teaches trainee solicitors:
- Paperwork
- Dealing with clients
- Constructing letters and wills
- Conveyancing
- What the LPC teaches trainee solicitors:
3: Practical stage

- The student must gain a training contract
- Work for a solicitors firm for 2 years to gain practical experience
- They are paid, but not at the full rate of a solicitor
- What will the student do:
- Work at a firm for experience
- Watch what solicitors do
- Take their own cases, with supervison
