Prejudice & Discrimination
Key Terms;
Ageism- discrimination on the grounds of being old, middle-aged or young
Community- people who work and live together so that everyone benefits
Discrimination- putting prejudiced thoughts into action
Equality- where everyone has the same value and importance
Harmony- to live peacefully with understanding and respect
Homophobia- discrimination on the grounds of sexuality
Justice- to treat people fairly
Positive Discrimination- benefits given to those who usually face negative discrimination
Prejudice- pre judge someone without evidence, negative thoughts
Racism- discrimination on the grounds of ethnicity/race
Religious Prejudice- prejudice on the grounds of faith or belief which can lead to discrimination
Sexism- discrimination on the grounds of being male or female
Tolerance- to accept people’s differences
Minority Rights- small groups within a society, laws exist to give these groups protection and rights and larger groups may discriminate against them
Multiculturalism- racial/social harmony brought by having many cultures within a society who understand and accept each other
TYPES OF PREJUDICE;
Racism e.g. calling someone names because of the colour of their skin
Ageism e.g. not listening to someone’s opinion because of their age
Sexism e.g. refusing someone a job because of their gender
Homophobia e.g. someone being attacked because the attacker thinks they are gay
Religious Prejudice e.g. killing people of a certain faith because of what they believe
CAUSES OF PREJUDICE;
Upbringing – parents’ attitudes against a certain group are also believed by their children, so that the children behave in an unfair way towards that group of people
Bad experience – a bad experience with someone from a certain group may affect a person’s attitudes to others in the same group, leading to the belief that “they are all like that”
Media – biased coverage of an event may make someone form prejudiced attitudes, because they believe what the media said and take it as true for everyone in that group
Ignorance – judging someone or a group of people in a negative way without having any real knowledge about them
Scapegoating – blaming others as an excuse for a problem
HOW IS IT SHOWN?
Verbal – making a comment/joke
Physical – violent action towards a person
Abuse of Property – negative graffiti slogans
Discrimination by action – not employing someone and bullying
EFFECTS OF DISCRIMINATION;
POSITIVE
NEGATIVE
-feelings of determination and being proud of who you are
-sense of community as people fight against discrimination
-sense of purpose
-can provide jobs and support to people under-represented in areas of society
-balancing up society, for example making sure all groups are fairly treated and represented in all aspects of society
-emotionally, feeling left out, lonely, depressed and even suicidal
-isolation within a community
-physically driven out the community
-sense of injustice
-loss of property and possessions
-death, the most extreme form…
