Priestly uses stage directions to convey his major themes in the play. With Arthur at one end of the table and his with 'at the other', the audience can make a number of suggestions. Firstly, and perhaps most simplistically, the physical distance between the two clearly symbolises the distance there is between them in their relationship. For whatever reason, there is no closeness, physically or emotionally, between Birling and his wife. An alternative interpretation
