A Level PE - Types of Transfer:
Transfer: ‘The influence that one skill has on the learning and performance of another (can be positive, negative or nothing)’
- The process is very important to the acquisition of the movement skills because practically all learning is based on some form of transfer
There are 6 types of transfer (NPPBRZ):
- Negative Transfer
- Positive Transfer
- Proactive Transfer
- Bi-lateral Transfer
- Retroactive Transfer
- Zero Transfer
There are 6 Categories of Skill Transfer:
- Transfer Between Skills - such as all racket sports
- Practice to Performance - transferring skills learnt in training to a competitive environment (this training is more likely to be done at the correct intensity)
- Abilities to Link Skills - such as having the balance to perform a good landing in gymnastics
- Limb to Limb (bilateral) - such as striking a football with the right or left foot
- Principle to Skill - e.g. the principles of defensive play in rugby are similar to football
- Stages of Learning - skills learnt in the cognitive phase will be built upon in the associative phase
Positive Transfer:
- When prior learning promotes present learning
- The higher the degree of similarity between the two tasks, the greater the chance of positive transfer between skills
- E.g. serve in tennis vs an over head serve in volleyball
Negative Transfer:
- This occurs when prior learning has an inhibiting effect on the learning of a new task
- Negative transfer is most likely to occur when a new response is required…
