A Level PE - Reinforcement:

Reinforcement: Te process that causes a response or behaviour to reoccur by forming and strengthening then S-R bond

  • The relationship between a stimulus and the specific action it initiates
  • Stimulus-Response Bond -> a S-R bond is the connection that is made between a stimulus and the response made to this stimulus
  • It is the system or process used to shape behaviour in the future

Positive Reinforcement:

  • Any action/stimulus/reward which increases the probability of the behaviour/action reoccurring
  • The use of the satisfier when the desired behaviour occurs, encouraging it to reoccur
  • E.g. the right pass made in football, at the correct time and they will go on to score a goal. The coach would say ‘well done’
  • Strengthens the S-R bond
  • Usually occurs after a successful performance and consists of extrinsic rewards or phrase
  • We are more likely to repeat a performance if it has been positively reinforced by a significant other
  • Can be internal or external

Internal Positive Reinforcement:

  • Is enacted through the performer’s own feelings of pride and satisfaction
  • This is a strong incentive or motive to continue and develop further (NACH)

External Positive Reinforcement:

  • Occurs through the action a person other than the performer
  • Such as a coach, teacher, parent, member of peer group or significant other giving praise, rewards, esteem or public recognition

Negative Reinforcement:

  • Is the removal of praise when a performance is incorrect
  • A performer wants to be rewarded, they they’re not rewarded then they will change their performance and try to increase the chances of being rewarded

OR

  • The removal of criticism when the desired behaviour occurs
  • The lack of criticism indicated to the performer that they have done well and encouraged them to repeat their actions
  • Negative reinforcement is an operation that weakens the incorrect
