Book 4; Dido
This book starts with Anna [Didos sister] convincing Dido that it is okay to fall in love with Aeneas- a stupid move
Dido is completely engulfed by Aeneas - she shows him around Sidon, "Dido was on fire with love" she would ask for him to repeat stories as she loved the way he spoke, also had a fondness for Ascanius
Consequently leading to "all the work she had started [to protect Carthage], all stood idle" - her life is Aeneas and her duties to her kingdom are clearly being neglected, even the people take notice off this and pray to Jupiter to help them.
Aeneas planned to leave without telling Dido, but she found out anyway, she gives a massive speech to beg him to stay with her- expressing her upset with him if he leaves. He leaves anyway
Built a pyre, got Aeneas clothes and sword, then fell onto the sword [killing herself] as she was so upset that Aeneas had left her.
Not the most flattering portrayal of women, she does not have a massive impact over Aeneas journey [delayed it a little bit]-plot device. But shows Aeneas devotion to found his own city.
