The main function of education is socialization - the process by which people learn to become good members of society. Socialization can happen outside school (for example at home). However, schools are important because many children spend more time there than anywhere else. From their first day at school, children begin to learn the rules and norms of society. This type of learning is called primary socialization - when young people are taught what is expected from them by older members of society. For example, they are taught how to speak, how to behave, how to think (e.g., they learn that it is wrong to kill), etc. In primary socialization, individuals learn what roles they will play in life.
