First Red Scare 1919-20

1905-1917 = Russia series revolutions - monarchy toppled + replaced by communist govt 1917 ~ sent shock waves around World - made Capitalist America disturbed led to miners striking

1919 = 3,600+ strikes - 1 in 4 workers striking

As striking increased more conspiracies of communist revolution - break out of Red Hunting (accusing others of communism)

Anti-communist feelings escalating - Americans no longer felt free to express opinions ~ feared communists suspicions

Some areas - violence broke out   = KKK targeted groups classed 'Un-American'

Second Red Scare 1940s-50s

Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States intensified hysteria over the perceived threat posed by Communists in the U.S. became known as the Red Scare

National witch hunt for suspected communist supporters - McCarthyism

Joseph McCarthy - Republican Senator made aggressive accusations + led witch hunts on suspected communist supporters - played major role in anti-communism movement

Hollywood 10 - ten suspected directors, actors + screenwriters - imprisoned + refused to answer any question on political affiliation - led to them being blacklisted by Hollywood studios
