Definition
A malignant tumour that starts in the testicles
Causes
NOT KNOWN but risk is increased by:
- undecended testes
- smoking
- age/race
Symptoms
- a lump/swelling in either testicle
- a dull ache or pain in the testicles, scrotum or lower abdomen
- collection of fluid
- fatigue
Treatment
CHEMOTHERAPY - non directed so any cells including healthy ones could die
LYMPH NODE SURGERY - lymph nodes in abdomen removed
RADIOTHERAPY - directed so only cancerous cells are targeted
ORCHIDECTOMY - removal of the testicle
Management
Sperm banking - ensures that patient could still have biological children even if testicles are removed
Testosterone Replacement Therapy - usually given after orchidectomy to keep normal levels of testosterone
Orchid - a male support group for people in similar situations
Stop smoking
Get screened regularly
Potential Impacts
FINANCIAL
-lowered income due to time off work
-hospital parking fees
-hospital fees if going private
PHYSICAL
-scars from surgery
-hair loss, vomiting, fatigue
-lump/swelling
-pain
-may have a testicle replacement implant if one or both are removed

-lack concentration/distracted by fear
-become more knowledgeable about condition
EMOTIONAL
-fear of death/treatment, embarrassed, depressed, angry, may affect relationships
SOCIAL
-unable to participate in events, may become withdrawn, could find a good support network within friends/family or a support group
