Respiration - Transport of oxygen

breif notes on the transport of oxygen

?

Oxygen Transport

  • Majority of oxygen is carried by haemoglobin
  • Oxygen saturated haemoglobin is known as oxy haemoglobin
  • At the tissues, the acidity of the blood increases (co2 and lactic acid) resulting in a lower partial pressure.
  • This causes oxygen to disassociate from the haemoglobin and released onto the myoglobin in the tissue.
  • This is known as the bohr effect
  • During exercise, increased co2 causes more disassociation of oxygen due to a lower pH level in the working muscles.
