Religion and prejudice

why are some people predjudice?

- A lack of understanding or education can lead to stereotyping,

- Fear and uncertainty can encorage scapegoating,

- Upbringing,

- Bad exsperience,

- The media

- they themselves have been a victim of prejudice.

What are the effects of prejudice?

- Feeling wothless, frightened or vulnerable,

- Discrimination ( acting on prejudice thoughts,)

- Could lead to  genocide ( for instance in WW2,)

- The victim could become prejudice themselves.

What are the differeet types of prejudice?

.- Racism - Ageism - Sexism - Religious prejudice - Disability Discrimination Prejudice on lifestyle or looks.

Religious Veiws:

CHRISTIANITY.

- Humand are created in Gods image therefore we are all equal.-  "Love your neighbour as yourself," from the parable of the Good Samaritan exsplains that Jesus helped anyone no matter the background equally.- "There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you all are one in christ Jesus."

ISLAM.

- Beleive Allah created all people equally and diversity is is one of Gods wonderfull creations.- Women are equal to men but have diferent roles, to bring uo children in their faith. Muhammad taught that anyone who does good work for allah is rewarded no mater gender, race or background. - "Allah does not look upon your outward apperance ; he looks upon your hearts and your deeds."

Responces to prejudices - through society and law...

- Sex discrimination act in 1975,

- Race Relations act in 1976,

- Disability discrimination act in 1995,

- Equality act in 2006 aginst religious dicrimination and ageism.)

These laws mean people should equal rights at work and have equal chnces for education and healthcare were if someone beleives they being dicriminated or any of the laws are being broken they can take legal action.

Mhatma Gandhi:

- Was a Hindu , who experienced racial prejudice and discrimination in South Africa under apartheid law ( wich seporated blacks and whites.)

- He carried out peacfull protests in South Africa to campaigned for the rights of Indians living in there eg. he and many others refused to pay an unfair poll tax, after 7 years this tax was lifted.

- Also caried out peacfull protests in India in 1915 , against the British to give back India's  inderpendence ( he boycotted British goods and refused to pay taxes on salt and carried a salt march  form March to April 1930) the salt tax was lifted .

- His religion ment he beleived in loving everyone equally and treating them wih respect becasue everyone is created by God. This also means he carried out non violent peacfull protests.

- Possitive discrimination - treating people more favourably becasue they have been discriminated in the past,

- Tolerance - respecting the beleifs and practises of others,

- Justice - Bringing about what is right and fair according to the law or making uo for what has been done wrong,

- Harmony - living in peace with others.
