To reveal character, to develop relationships, to illustrate and develop a theme, to move the plot forward, to gain a specific response from the reader
Recognise the main forms of thought and dialogue in fiction
Direct Speech/Thought - Tells the reader exactly what was said or thought
Indirect Speech/Thought - The narrator reports what was said or thought
Free DIrect/Indirect Speech - As above but without comment from the narrator or explanation of who said what
Recognise how levels of formality can occur in fiction
Through the use of differing levels of formality ie sophistication of lexis, amount of syllables, sophistication of grammatical structure, the reader can draw conclusions from what they are presented with
