Aron Hakodesh
The Ark
Part of the synagogue containing the Torah.
Bet Din
Religious Court made up of Rabbis.
Bimah
A platfrom in which the Torah is read from, it is centre of the room, and main focal point of the room, the seats face inwards towads the bimah.
Chazzan (Cantor)
A person who leads or chants prayers in the synagogue.
Discrimination
To act against someone for a particular reason; it is normally a negative action
eg. their race.
Equality
People should be given the same rights and opportunities.
Festival
A religious celebration or commemoration.
Gemara
A commentary on the Mishnah which is part of the Talmud.
Halakhah
The code of conduct for Jewish life.
Holocaust
Hewbrew - Shoah
The murder of six million Jews during the second world war, (and other people who were minority groups such as the disabled, Jews, homosexuals etc).
Israel
1) The ancient name for Kewish people;
2) The modern Jewish country in the East;
3) Literally means "One who struggles with God"
Justice
Bringing about what is right, fair and according to the law or making up for a wrong that has been commited.
Kaddish
An important prayer in the Jewish prayer service.
Ketuvim
The third section of te Tenakh; the writings.

Kosher
Food that meets the Jewish Law.
Menorah
A seven-branched candle stick.
Messianic Age
When God's anointed one will come and lead the Jews.
Mezuzah
A scroll containg the Shema.
Minyan
A group of 10 men required for a service.
Mishnah
The first written version of the oral tradition; the authoritive document was put together in 200 C.E.
Mitzvot
Jewish rules or commandments.
Ner Tamid
'Eternal Light'
A light kept burning in the synagogue - continual light.
Nevi'im
The second section of the Tenakh; the prophets.
teNakh
Orthodox Jews
Jews who believe God gave Moses the complete Torah and therefore live according to Jewish traditions and laws.
Pesach
Passover
A festival in rememberance of the Jewish Exodus from Egypt. Celebrated in Spring.
Pilgrimage
A journey to a holy site.
Pilgrimage is itself an act of worship and devotion.
Prejudice
Unfairly judging someone before the facts are known.
Rabbi
A religious leader or teacher.
Reform Jews
Jews who believe the Torah was inspired by God and was developed through their history - therefore laws may be changed or adapted as modern life changes.
Responsa
The correspondence of Rabbis concerning religious views.
Seder
The ceremonial dinner on the first night (or both nights) of Passover {Pesach}.
Shabbat
Holy day of the week; day of spiritual renewal.
It begins at Friday sunset and ends at nightfall on Saturday.
Shema
Jewish Prayer affirming their belief in one God, found in the Torah.
Star of David
A symbol of Judaism said to represent the sheid of King David who ruled Israel in the tenth century BCE.
Synagogue
A building for Jewish worship, public prayer, study and gathering.
Tallit
A prayer shawl.
Talmud
Commentary by the rabbis on the Torah - Mishnah and Gemara together in one collection.
Tefiilin
Small leather boxes containing extracts from the Torah, strapped to the beleivers arms and foreheads during morning prayer.
Tenakh
The 24 books of the Jewish bible.
Containing the Torah, first five books of the bible;
Nevi'im, the prophets;
and Ketuvim, the writings.
The Covenant
God's agreement to look after the Jews as his chosen people, subject to Israels obedience.
Torah
1) The first five books of Moses, the first section of the Tenakh, and the five books of the bible.
2) The whole of the Jewish teaching.
3) The law.
Trefah
Forbidden foods, means 'torn'.
Western Wall
The only part of the ancient Temple of Herod remaining.
Jews go there to pray, it is a place of pilgrimage.
Worship
A specific act of religious devotion.

Yeshivot; plural
A college where the Torah and Talmud are studied.
Kippah
A skull cap.
Marriage
A legal union between a man and a woman.
Divorce
Legal ending of a marriage.
