• BELOW 1500cm ~ FINGERPRINTING 
• 'Fingerprint' is unique to every compound
• computer will compare IR spectra against a database of known pure compunds 

a technique for measuring the masses of particles accurately

• in a mass spec an electron is knocked off an organic molecule ~ MOLECULAR ION CREATED
• molecular ion produces the peak furthest to the RIGHT (highest m/z)
• accurate mass of molecular ion can be used to determine the molecular formula
