Problems:
Only 2500 hectares remain for arable farming, compared to 30000 hectares in 1600. Human activity spreading north from Thames estuary disturbs farming.
Conservation:
Reclamation of land lost by sea, sea walls are built. Sustainable development and managed retreat.

Desert case studies.
USA - Nevada
Ver rich land, dams, reservoirs, mining, national parks and irrigated areas allow big cities to flourish in large deserts. People can farm and mine for income.
Pakistan:
Compared to USA Nevada, Pakistani deserts are harsh and difficult to live in, more people work in agriculture and more people live in villages rather than cities. People here are relatively poor, with the average income being around 75x the income of people in the USA.

Tropical rainforest
The Amazon
Destruction:
Deforestation for cattle farming and palm oils, huge areas of land are demolished every day with a huge industry for the products made from the rainforest.
Conflict:
People believe the rainforest and it's habitants should be preserved and protected from the industry that is eating up the rainforest.
Protection:
Dividing forest into groups, making a survey of areas to be logged, using selective logging and heavy monitoring of the rainforest.

Restless Earth case studies.
Seattle, MEDC:
Rescue responses were fairly quick with good earthquake equipment, earthquake-proof buildings reduced damage but damage was still done. Just 1 woman died, of a heart attack.
Gujarat, LEDC:
In some places rescue operations only began to take place 48 hours after the earthquake struck, rescue workers had mere shovels to dig the debris. 20,000 dead and 160,000 injured and 600,000 homeless. Economic losses recorded at US$2-4 billion.
