Fats help to provide concentrated sources of energy and help to insulate the body in cold weather. There are two main types:
- Saturated fats are usually obtained from animal sources, for example butter and lard. The exceptions are coconut and palm oils.
- Polyunsaturated fats come from vegetable sources, such as sunflower oil.
It has been claimed that a low-fat diet is the essential to avoiding severe health problems, but really it is the type of fats you eat;
Bad fats increase cholesterol and your risk of certain diseases, while good fats protect your heart and support overall health. In fact, good fats—such as omega-3 fats—are essential to physical and emotional health.
Saturated fats are stated to be a lot less healthier than unsaturated and therefore it is recommended that we are to reduce our intake of saturated fats and replace these with unsaturated fats (sunflower oil, omega 3 fats etc.)
