English Literature - Author Backgrounds

Siegfried Sassoon - influential poet, writer and soldier. Awarded MC and recommended for VC. 'Suicidal raids.' Patriot. Made a declaration and opposed the war, sent to Craiglockhart Hospital.

R.C. Sherriff - His seventh play, Journey's End, was written in 1928 and published in 1929 and was based on his experiences in the war as a captain.

Vera Brittain - Pacifistic. Middle class, unusual to have been active in the war as a nurse. Feminist.

Ernest Raymond - Fought on 6 different fronts.

Wilfred Owen - Influential poet, mentored by Sassoon. Shell shocked- sent to Craiglockhart. 

Rupert Brooke - Died early on during the war. Shortly after is 27th Birthday. 

Sylvia Pankhurst - Feminist. Pacifist. Dedicated voter for Women's rights. 

Robert Graves - Poet, soldier, friend of Sassoon, helped send him to Craiglockhart. Suffered from Shellshock- though never hospitilized. 

Erich Maria Remarque - German. Soldier, fought in the war, however, was severely injured and remained in hospital for the remainder of the war.
