Acids and alkalis are classified by the extent of their ionisation in water.

Examples:

Strong acids- hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric.

Weak acids- citric, carbonic, ethanoic.

Stong alkalis- sodium hydroxide solution.

Weak alkalis- ammonia solution.
