Open loop sports:

- higher skill level

- many variables

- e.g. rugby, team sports

Closed loop sports:

- lower skill level

- fewer variables

- e.g. running, swimming

Physical literacy in sport:

- competency in basic motor and sport specific skills

- enable athlete to later pursue other sports

- linked to lifelong sports participants and improved performance

Schemes:

- sporting giants (tall people with athletic potential in specific sports)

- screening of young (7 yr olds) - results analysed by national sports federation

- sport boarding schools - 2 hrs of academic + 6hrs of sport training

- brutal/drug use

- centres of excellence with coaches, physios etc

- East Germany legacy - drugs and brutal methods. West Germany did not copy

Pathways that introduce people into sport + Pathways that allow people to progress in their chosen sport based on individual maturation of the performer rather than chronological age

early specialisation: gymnastics, swimming, diving. late specialisation: Track and Field, team sports, rowing.
