Provision of food in the UK

• We import 44% of our total food consumption
• 95% of our fruit comes from abroad
• half of our vegitables are imported
• 30% of all goods transported by lorries in the UK are for food

Why does the UK import so much of its food

• Population - there are more people so more people need more food
• Climate - we are quite cold so we might need other foods bought in that are seasonal
• Wealth - Britain is quite wealthy so we can afford to bring in different foods
• Tourism - poeple going abroad will have a taste of different foods and want to try it again
• Migration - migrants might bring their cultures and food to Brightain with them

Impacts of importing food - negative

• Polutants - transporting relaeses polutants such as CO2 which leads to the greenhouse effect which leads to climate change - 10% of the UKs total greenhouse emmisions in 2015 came directly from transporting food
• Pestacide - a lot of unhealthy chemicals are put on imported goods such as fruit - it can be bad for you
  
• Unfair trade - mangatout production producers recieve 12% of total cost whereas super markets recieve 47%

Positive

• Employment - the amount o jobs are increased
• Consumer demand is met - we have access to many products
• Health - we get access tyo healthier foods

Advantages

• Cleanest fossil fuels - 45% less CO2 emisions than other non re knewable sources
• Employment - 1.2 million people
• Less risks of environmental accidents than oil
• can be transported in different ways - pipelines, tankers over land + sea

Disadvantages

• Fracking uses lots of water - waste of water + chemicals cause earthquakes
• Some gas reserves in countries that are politically unstable or prepaired to use gas supply as weapons
• Ground water get contaminated - effect wildlife
• Not possible in less developed countries - too expensive
• Expensive to build + maintain
• Contributes to global warming
• Dangerous if handled + transported carelessly
