Perception - the process which involves the interpretation of information. this is the process by which we make sense of the stimuli we receive. It consists of three elements :
-Detection- The brain Identifies that a stimuli is present
-Comparison - Having identified the stimulus it is now compared to similar stimuli that we have stored in our memory.
-Recognition - when the stimulus is matched to one stored in the memory it is identified or recognition
Short Term Store - All stimuli entering the information processing system are held for a very short time (0.25-1 second). these stores have a very large capacity with a separate store for each sense. The perceptual mechanism determines which of the infomation is important to us and we direct our attention to this. this is called recognition aspect of perception.
