Obviously, there won't be any changes to the Bitcoin

Normally, Bitcoiners don't care much about what happens in Shitcoin-land, but now that Ethereum and proof-of-stake (PoS) have combined, Bitcoin Twitter has been abuzz. Obviously, there won't be any change to the Bitcoin network itself, but I think this "upgrade" still deserves some attention. We can anticipate the gloves to come off in the narrative war now that Ethereum has eliminated the "dirty" and "wasteful" externalities associated with proof-of-work (PoW), and I believe Bitcoiners ought to be prepared to respond.

This is very different from Bitcoin and proof-of-work, which are incentive systems based on rewards. Miners in Bitcoin can try to break the rules by creating blocks with bad formatting, invalid transactions, etc., but full nodes will just ignore these blocks. The worst-case scenario is some energy loss. Miners are also permitted to construct on older blocks, but these chains will never catch up without 51% of the hashpower, wasting energy once more. There will be no loss of bitcoin or mining equipment for any miner who takes part in these activities, whether intentionally or not, but they will not receive any new rewards. Bitcoin miners can choose to act and take risks rather than live in fear.

There is no objective way to choose between two competing blockchains, and any new nodes joining the network will ultimately need to rely on an existing source of truth to clear up any ambiguity. This is very different from Bitcoin, where the "true" chain always has the most work. If a single node broadcasts chain Y and it contains more work, then Y is the correct blockchain, regardless of how many nodes are telling you chain X. The header of a block can demonstrate its own worth, eliminating the need for trust entirely.
