Dialysis
2 main types of dialysis- haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.
Haemodialysis- usually occurs in Hospital. Blood leaves pateient from artery and tehn enters machine. Flows through tubing made from selectively permeable membrane within the machine. This allows echange of substances between the blood and dialysis solution. Dialyisis fluid contains substances suc has chloride and sodium ions, urea, and other substances at the correct concentratioons. Excess substances in the blood diffuse out and into the dialysis fluid. The 2 fluids run in opposite directions, a counter-current mechanism, this maximises the exchange.
Pertioneal dialysis occurs within the body! Uses persons abodoment membrane. This usually is done at home overnight. Dialysis fluid entres the abdomen via a catheter, exchange happens between the dialysis fluid and the tissues fluid in the abdomen across the perioneal membrane. Substances from the plasma will enter the tissue fuild. Waste fluid is then drained and discarded.
Patients on dialysis have very strict diets and can only drink a limitted amount!!! However, it ensures there survival. Of course they could get a transplant but there are difficulties with availablity and rejection!
