- At first he is introduced to show how awful Darcy was (in Elizabeth's eyes) compared to the honest and gentlemanly Wickham. He is presented as a victim, and paints Darcy to be a true villain.
- Wickham's greed is shown when he loses interest in Elizabeth in favour of a richer girl, although it is dismissed by her, as well as everyone's warning of his dishonesty
- As the truth comes out, it is revealed that Wickham is deceptive and avaricious, and Darcy was in fact the victim in their relationship.
- Wickham is revealed to be truly money-driven and malicious when he uses Lydia to extort money from the Bennets and Mr Darcy
