Sea Defences

Advantages

  • SEA WALL; protects the base of cliffs, land and buildings against erosion. Also, can prevent coastal flooding in some areas.
  • GROYNES; Prevents the movement of beach material along the coast by longshore drift, allows for the build-up of a beach . Beaches are a natural defence against erosion and an attraction for tourists.
  • ROCK ARMOUR; Absorbs the energy of waves and allows the build-up of a beach.
  • BEACH NOURISHMENT; Beaches are a natural defence against erosion and coastal flooding.Beaches also attract tourists.
  • MANAGED RETREAT; Encourages the development of beaches and salt marshes and the cost is low. These areas attract wildlife which bring in tourists.

Disadvantages

  • SEA WALL; Expensive to build. Curved sea walls reflect the energy of the waves back to the sea. This means that the waves remain powerful .Over time the wall may begin to erode. The cost of maintenance is high.
  • GROYNES; Can be seen as unattractive. Also costly to build and maintain.
  • ROCK ARMOUR; Can be expensive to obtain and transport the boulders. Some come as far as Norway.
  • BEACH NOURISHMENT; It is a relatively inexpensive option but requires constant maintenance to replace the beach material as it is washed away.
  • MANAGED RETREAT; People will need to be compensated for loss of buildings and farmland.

Evaluation

Councils have to decided where to put sea defences as they are expensive and can effect other parts of the coastline .
