- Napoleon is ambitious - "a reputation for getting his own way."
- Napoleon see's himself as more important than the other animals - "with half a gallon (of beer) for Napoleon himself"
- Napoleon is lazy - "Napoleon produced no schemes of his own"
- Napoleon separates himself from the other animals suggesting he is of a higher rank - "then there was lamp oil and candles for the house, sugar for Napoleon's own table."
- Napoleon does not care about the other animals - when Boxer gets hurt Napoleon sends Squealer to see his most loyal follower - "a quarter of an hour later Squealer appeared"
- He constantly disagrees with Snowball, it has to be his way or no way - "this arrangement would of worked well enough if it had not been for the disputes between Snowball and Napoleon"
- Napoleon becomes master of the dogs - "it was noticed that they wagged their tails to him in the same way the other dogs had been use to doing to Mr Jones

- Napoleons role in the novel is to rule over the animals, it is clear when the story progresses that Napoleon never had any intentions to follow the resolution the way Old major had imagined it.
- Napoleon is based on Joseph Satlin, he is a typical dictator, who hides behind Squealer to achieve his aims.
- The farm adapt to help him achieve his aims, for example the commandments change for Napoleon's benefit.
- Through out the novel he systematically destroys all of the ideals expressed in the beginning and begins to adopt the behaviour of the humans.

- Napoleon creates an atmosphere of hysteria in which animals confess to the smallest of crimes - "the three hens that were the ringleaders in the attempted rebellion over the eggs came forward and stated that Snowball had appeared to them in a dream and incited them to disobey Napoleons orders. They too were slaughtered."

- Napoleon was the name of the French military leader who ended up seizing power and tyrannising the French people.
- Like other dictators (such as Hitler), Napoleon surrounds himself with people who worship and follow him, meaning that he cannot be critisised.
