Munich Putsch

Causes

  • 1923 was a bad year for Wiemar Germany - Invasion of the Ruhr, Hyperinflation
  • Hitler decided this would be the time to topple the state, with it struggling and Stresemann only beginning to repair it
  • The Nazis were at there strongest with 55,000 members
  • Hitler thought key nationalist politicians would support him
  • Hoped to emulate Mussolini when he marched through Rome
  • 8th November 1923 - Hitler hijacked a local government meeting and announced he was talking control of the government with Ludendorff.
  • Nazi Storm troopers began to capture official buildings. But were stopped by weimar police.

Effects

  • Hitler had miscalculated the german peoples opinion
  • Nazi Party was excluded for 5 years
  • Hitler prohibited from public speaking til 1927
  • Hitler imprisoned til December 1924 allowing him to write Mien Kampf
  • Prison also allowed him to reorganize the party to be focused on politics rather than strength (ei propaganda, Hitler youth, right wing support)

Overall summary

Hitler tried to take advantage of the economic crisis in Germany while the party was at its strongest point in its history, but miscalculated his appeal to the public but his prison sentence allowed him to restructure the party to allow him to become chancellor and later fuhrer
