eukaryotic cells vs prokaryotic cells

Similarities

  • Animal, Plant and prokaryotic cells have a cytoplasm
  • Animal, plant and prokaryotic cells have a plasma membrane.
  • All cells have DNA
  • Animal, plant and prokaryotic cells have ribosomes

Differences

  • Prokaryotic cells are smaller than eukaryotic cells.
  • Prokaryotic cells have no membrane bound organelles where as eukaryotic cells do have membrane bound organelles.
  • Prokaryotic DNA is not stored within a nucleus where as eukaryotic DNA is stored in a nucleus.
  • Prokaryotic cells chave murein (a glycoprotien) in the cell wall where as plant cells have cellulose.
  • Prokaryotic cells may have a flagella
  • Some prokaryotes have more than one plasmid.
  • Animal and plant cells have mitochondria, prokaryotes do not.

Overall comparison

Animal and plant cells are more similar to each other than they are to prokaryotic cells. Prokaryotic cells do have DNA but it is not protein bound and is free floating in the cytoplasm.
