Channel Straightening- flood management strategies

Advantages

  • Effective in speeding up water flow along a short stretch of river, reducing flood risk. This is because the water doesn't have to move as far.
  • Navigation can also be improved. (e.g The Portrack Cut in the River Tees near Stockport).
  • Insurance premiums may be reduced for homeowners.

Disadvantages

  • Flooding may happen downstream through meandering sections instead, as flood water is carried there faster.
  • Theres more erosion downstream as the water's flowing faster.
  • This strategy can be expensive and high-maintenance, especially dredging.
  • Straightened sections can look unattractive (especially if concrete lined) and unnatural.

Evaluation

What is this Strategy?         The river's course is straightened - meanders are cut out by building artificial straight channels.
