Channel Straightening- flood management strategies

Advantages

Effective in speeding up water flow along a short stretch of river, reducing flood risk. This is because the water doesn't have to move as far.
Navigation can also be improved. (e.g The Portrack Cut in the River Tees near Stockport).
Insurance premiums may be reduced for homeowners.

Disadvantages

Flooding may happen downstream through meandering sections instead, as flood water is carried there faster.
Theres more erosion downstream as the water's flowing faster.
This strategy can be expensive and high-maintenance, especially dredging.
Straightened sections can look unattractive (especially if concrete lined) and unnatural.

Evaluation

What is this Strategy? The river's course is straightened - meanders are cut out by building artificial straight channels.
