Causes and effects of the Great Depression

Causes

  • The Wall Street Crash (find quiz in resources)
  • Overproduction: new mass production methods and mechanisation
  • Trade: Europe couldn't afford American goods, they owed the USA money, and the USA had large tariffs on goods
  • Poverty and unequal wealth: blacks, farmers, immigrants, workers
  • Bank failures

Effects

  • Massive unemployment: 1933: 14 million out of work
  • Homelessness: Hoovervilles, self-help, hobos
  • The Dust Bowl: drought in the Midwest, over farmed, top soil turned into dust, desert-like conditions

Overall summary

There were other reasons for the downfall of the American economy, but the Wall Street Crash remained one of the most, or the most, prominent reason why the Great Depression came about. The Depression reached it worse in 1933, and only really recovered in 1945.
