1.1.2 Aristotle's philosophical thoughts

Advantages

  • Aristotle's theory can be defended given that it is made up from his studies of the natural world and is perhaps more reliable because of it.

Disadvantages

  • Francis Bacon: Bacon was known as the father of empiricism, was instrumental in influencing the development of modern science. He criticised Aristotle, claiming that final causation has no place in empirical science but is a metaphysical issue, since purpose is a divine matter.
  • Aristotle's concept of the prime mover contradicts his belief in empiricism as it is purely founded on rational thought.
  • The theory of the prime mover implies that there is only one reason for motion and change.

Evaluation

Aristotle's philosophical thought is weak in the sense that it is self-contradictory; he claims to reside in empiricism, yet develops the notion of the prime mover, a concept entirely cultivated upon rational thought.
